Your exact C.O.L. may vary some with the different style bullets. HOWEVER, C.O.L. is very flexible and easily tuned to your firearms by doing a proper load development. Even SAAMI recognizes that listed C.O.L.'s is more of a suggestion than a hard and fast rule.

Give this a read...

Thread on thehighroad.org about tumbling live ammo.

It seems to be a popular question lately.

Personally, I don't see the need to do it. I guess I could if you were lubing cases and loading on a progressive. I wouldn't have any issues with tumbling live ammo.

Hmmm. Interesting.  I wonder if your Lee expander die is different than mine. Perhaps yours is older or newer, and Lee changed the length of the working stem.

Trust me, if adjustment was the problem, I'd have it solved. I ran the expander down much farther than I like - radically flaring the case - and the solid wadcutters still crushed cases.  The length of the "business part" of the expander is much, much shorter than the length of the bullets.

I have no problems with semi-wadcutters and other bullets that protrude from the case. The Lee expander stem is long enough to accommodate them.

I would think this would be the cat's butt for bullet making, it sure won't work as-is for "regular" reloading.

CH's site seems a bit anachronistic but looks to me like they cater to the out-in-left-field kind of shooter, you know, the guys on the edge that the rest of us eventually follow....

Thanks Ned. I had no idea they were still around. Today, all I see is RCBS, HDY, Redding, & Lee etc. I am almost certain the press you have is their top of the line, I think it was called the heavyweight, but not sure. Many years ago, one of my friends father had one that looked just like yours. He used it to swage bullets. He said it was the one to get if I ever wanted to swage bullets.

The length will still be the same, measured from end to end.  Depending on the weapon in question, magazine, etc., will help determine the exact OAL for that bullet.

Here's a quick, but pretty good article on the subject that explains it much better than I can.

If we look at reloading a 30-06 for example, the COL is 3.25".  My question is, the actual tip varies from a spire point to a HP,a blunt tip,......, so if I was to make the COL at 3.25, the amount of the bullet being pushed into the case neck is different.  Is this a correct statement or am I missing something.  So the distance of the bullet (once chambered) will differ from tip styles?Huh? I realise that the bullet seater die does not push from the very tip.
